HALIBUT PROTECTION REPORT PUBLISHED
VICTORIA, B.C. ' The United States and Canada must bo , prepared to take far less halibut in future from their north Pacific halibut banks if tho supply of fish is to be protected from continual depletion, according to the first report of the International Fisheries' Commission, made public here by John P. Babcock, of« Victoria, chairman- of’ that ’ body. ‘ The' commission’s chief recommendations are:— , ■ (1) Immediate . closing of two halibut “nursery areas,?’ one off the Queen Charlotte Islands and the, other off l Capo Addington, Alaska, to fishing, and the ultimate closing of all similar halibut areas. (2) Extension of the present closed season on halibut fishing. ■ (3) Control of all halibut fisheries for the future on a zoning; system so that riie catch from any; area in need of protection is reduced in direct ratio to the’decline in returns for - a definite amount of fishing. ,
