SCOTS WANT CHECK ON IRISH IMMIGRATION
LONDON, July 19. A deputation representing theChurch of Scotland, the United Free Church of . Scotland, and the Free Church of Scotland, visited Sir William joynson-Hicks, the Home Secretary, in London, to request the imposition.of a “system" on Irish migration to Scotland. The deputation produced statistics shoving that the Irish population of Scotland from 1881 to 1901 had increased by 324 per cent., compared with an increase in native Scots of 184 per cent. Similar figures for the succeeding twenty years wore .39 and 6 per cent, of Glasgow ’s population and receive 70 per cent, of the relief funds. The deputation said that immigration had increased unemployment among Scots, alsq that 7 many of the immigrant! were undesirables' who were inadmissible to the United States. Sir William Joynson-Hicks was'sym pathetic, but pointed out that the “system’’ was entirely novel as ap plied to the British Isles. Negotiations had been proceeding with the Free State for. the repatriation of pauper Irish 'in Scotland. He expressed the opinion that a more satisfactory solution- would be found on those lines.
