" WELLINGTON, Last' Night. { There was a large attendance ft tht luncheon to-day tendered by the New Zealand - Veterinary Association to visiting delegates attending,the annual, conference. The president.! (Dr. O. J. Reakes), Director of Agriculture !pfe-. sided, and amongst the guests were the Hon. O. J. Hawken (Minister of Agriculture), Dr. T. H. Valintinu (DirectorGeneral of Health), General R,;Young (G.O.C. New Zealand’Military Forces), and Mr H. M. Campbell M.P. ; Tho president in proposing the toast of “Our Guests” said that-as an Association they were very young blit they were developing rapidly. , The Minister of Agricuture (Hon. O. J. Hawken) contended ‘that there should be some way to give the priyate ■veterinary practitioner better. remuneration than he had received in the past. He wanted the private practitioners to realise that the’Government were anxious to help them. Healthy stock was a great asset to any country. Dr. T, H. Valihtinc said that the veterinarian now ranked with, tha medical profession, , General E. Young did not hold out much hope for tho veterinarians as it looked very much as if tho poor bid horse was doomed. Mr. A. M. Brodie, vice-president of the Association in proposing tho toast of “the pastoral industry’ said he could not agree with Colonel Young that the horse ' was doomed. Good horses were becoming very scarce and people would wake up soon and begin breeding horses again. He referred to the great , increase in sheep, lambs and cdttlc since '1907, . ‘ ’
