TIMBER INDUSTRY IN A DEPLORABLE STATE

TAUMAEUNUI, Last Night.. 1 Over 30 sawmillcrs and managers yesterday attended a meeting at the invitation of the spfecial timber committee set up by the Goverimcnt to examine the circumstances of the’ timber industry. Mr. G. Goldfinch, Mayor ol Ohakune, presided. Messrs. 1 J. W. Collins, W. C. Ward, members of thc_ timber committee, and A. Seed, Dominion secretary of the Federated Sawmillcrs, were also present. Mr. Collins'outlined the recommendations of the timber committee. Details of the , draft grading rules were also explained. , The meeting resolved to support strongly tho general principles of tha proposals, though there were several minor details of grading rules and schedules of definitions which would be referred to the timber committee for further consideration. : Mr, Collins emphasised the deplorable state of the depression which existed in the timber industry, and said it was not in tho interest of the Dominion that such a large employing industry should be allowed to wane. Ijt was the unanimous opinion of the meeting that immediate steps bo taken by the sawmillcrs themselves to bring about better co-ordination and better, co-operation with tho object of securing: greater efficiency both in the interest of those engaged in the industry, and to the end of ensuring better service to the tmblic.
