LADIES’ HOCKEY,

HAMUA-3, .HUKANUI 1,

Txaa Oor Own Correspondent. . A ■very interesting gaino' was . played on the grounds of the Hamau Club recently, when the two leading teams in the Bush Union Ladies' Hockey "Association, Hamua andMffkanui tried conclusions. Nearly six'hundred spectators were present, and after a thrilling game, Hamua emerged' victorious by three goals to one. £ ‘ . ' ' •

From tho bully off, Hukanui took play into Hamua’s territory,' 1 and some close calls were made ‘bn the 'Hamua goalie who cleared in fine style; The play wasi transferred to mid-field, and the ball travelled up: and down at a great pace. Hukanui’ then took’ tho lead, and after a hht meICC in of Hamna’s goal, MisSf J 1 J ohnstoilo ’shot a good goal for Hukahiii, aidpst them in the lead.

The reverse woko Hamua up and they made desperate efforts td equalise, Miss Green having a shot' at •’tt;b , 'goal, , '‘‘Bixt was ruled offside, Erolu tho'resulting hit, tho Hukanui ’ fprWhrds"took' the leather to the other cad of the field, but the defence of tho Hamua' backs drove them back, and 1 cafricd ’the" play to Hukanui's goat,Where Mash Green, of Hamua sent in '^hbt

which found the net, thus equalising tho scores. Play now became very fast, and first class hockey was the order of tho day, both teams striving to gain tho lead. Miss E- Cavanagh, Hukanui’s bully was putting in some clever work, but was not supported in her efforts, and a good chance to score was lost, Mrs Ryan (Hamua’s goalie) making a fine save. Half time was called with Hamua attacking ia lino style., From tho bully, Miss I. Biddle, Hamua’s centre, went off at a great pace for tho defenders' goal, but was stopped by tho sound, defence of tho Hukanui . backs, who transferred to their opponents’ 25. Hukanui’s vanguard strove hard to penetrate the defence put up by tho Hamua backs, but the defence held, -and Hukanui wore gradually driven back, only to. bo put on tho defensive themselves, and they conceded a penalty corner. The leather shot out, and Miss Royal, right inner for Hamua, stopped tho ball, and transferred it to I. Biddle who found tho net with a hot shot. Shortly after play Lad resumed she repeated.tho shot, but the Hukanui goalie, Miss Smith, made a "wonderful save, and cleared safely. 1 Not to be denied, Hamua wore again on the aggressive, and I. Biddle, being given a nice opening by M. Royal, spoilt a sure goal by being offside. Hukanui now livened up, and kept Hamua penned on their own 25, and were very unlucky in not registering at least two more goals, lack of experience in finishing off in tho circle being their chief

fault. Just before the call of time, Hukanui showed signs of tiring, the Hamua forwards kept up a great pace, and'their efforts were well rewarded, I. Biddle scoring the last goal, taking tho ball into the circle and making no mistake in'finding tho net. With only a fdw minutes to go, Hukanui strove hard do. score, but fate was against them, and. time was called, leaving Harauo tho winners by. three goals to one. Mr A. R. Cliffe, of Palmerston North, controlled the game. Notes bn the Game. The teams were very evenly matched, and showed that they had been efficiently coached. On the day’s play there was little between them, that little there was, being due to the finished work of Hamua players in the circle. Tho Hukanui team did well for a first year team, and should be a tough proposition before the season is ended. To individualise the players is somewhat difficult, the team work being tho most noticeable feature, but a word here about tho outstanding players, may bo a help to the selectors, whose task of selecting a representative team this year is by no means an enviable one. For Hukanui: Miss E. Cavanagh was tho outstanding player and showed cleverness in her stick work, a clever, heady player she sould make a splendid bully. : She, has pace, and should hold her supporting forwards well. Miss Johnstone, inside right, is t very cool player, has pace and know? what to do at tho right time, centres well, but is inclined to cramp ber team

mates, before centreing, should remember to take the ball no further than tho 25 line, then centre. The halves were a good lot. Miss draall getting through a Jot of work. Tho loft and right halves are very sound, N. Palmer was at times brilliant. D. Lawrenco was inclined to lose her place and should remember to keep out and not crowd in on her centre. - Miss K, Smith in goal was fair, but has the makings of a good gw:;? if propc >iy coached as .‘he mi \i some wonderful saves. Mrs Murray at left half was very sure, stops the ball well, and hits as though she meant business. Just tho sort of player to develop into a good defensive halfback. For Hamua Miss I. Biddlo was a tower of strength, being everywhere tho ball was. She should, make a great inside right and should combine well with Miss E. Cavanagh. Miss M. Royal played with her usual knowledge of the game, and was useful when tho circle was reached. A solid player, she is one who has had much experience. Miss J. Davis, a young player, should develop into a very good half, and is worth watching. Miss M. Biddle, a good fullback, should ;jtop tho ball before hitting, as speculating is dangerous. This player is very cool and should develop into a safe defensive flayer. Miss Lawson left back, is a sound;

hitter and is safe. , 1 r Mrs. Eyan in goal was called upon to stop some hard shots, and proved a capable goalie, but should remember ' to use her feet more.
