MANAWATU-OROUA BRANCH SHEETS, A meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua branch of the New Zealand Pigs Breeders’ Association was hold in Palmerston North yesterday morning. There were present Messrs. J. A. Bussell (in the chair), T. F. Shepperd, J. A. M'Farland, A. Dear, H. E. Thurston, H. E. Fleldhouse, H. Liggins, and E. M. Brown, tho recently appointed pig test: ing officer at the Massey College. Testing Scheme Matters. In reference d the'weighing'of pigs for the testing scheme the chairman stated that bo had interviewed Professor Bidddt who had told him that the weighing would be carried out by the tester when the litters were between three and five weeks’ old, and the second weighing when they were, between seven and nine weeks. Mr. Bussell also raised the question of earmarking which he considered most important. He advocated the use of numbered ear tags for each sow, and litter. Mr. Shepperd stated that the great argument against the use of ear tags was the fact that they irritated the sow, with tho result that the animals did not rest until they had rub:, bed the tags off. He advocated the use of an ear punch with a standard scale of car marks.

, After some further discussion, >lr. Bussell moved, fnat it be a recommendation to the College that a sec <TI. ear marks bo procured instead of tags,for tlie pig-testing under their scheme. It was - decided to invite Prof. Eiddet to attend the next meeting of the committee in order to finalise arrangements for the formation of an executive to. work with the College authorities iu conducting the testing. Appreciation Members expressed their appreciation of the work of the-secretary, Mr. hi. P. Noiisen, during the recent winter show. A most' gratifying number of new members for the association had been obtained, while the stall conducted at the show had aroused much favourable ceramet. It was !■ solved that an appreciation of Mii NdjlsenV work be placed upon the minutes. Members also voiced their warm appreciation of the splendid work of the president, Mr. J. A. Bussell. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. C. Haussmann, of Peilding, for his very able address on “Bacon" during the National Dairy Show. , > • Bacon Classes Report. The Prime Minister, Eight Honorable J. G. Coates, ‘ wrote expressing his sincere thanks for the bacon and ham of which the Manawatu-Oroua branch h>/. made him a gift during the show. ' i “I was very much interested in the particulars furnished by your branch concerning the finished product. I look forward to receiving the full detailed report of the bacon-class when it’ is completed," concludes the letter. The, chairman mentioned (that the bacon class report being drawn up by Prof. Eiddet, would be available for the next meeting of the branch. Sir E. D. D. M'Lean, president of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, also wrote conveying his thanks for the branch’s gift of bacon and ham. Competitions Scheme Too Elaborate. The Auckland provincial branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association. wrote stating that the Mana-watu-Oroua branch’s scheme for the establishment of provincial group pig competitions at A. and P. shows had i been considered by them at their annual meeting. The Auckland braneh had approved of tho idea set forth, but considered the scheme too elaborate to commence with and that a conference of the various branches should be called to draw up a less elaborate scheme. The northern branch also considered that Mr. K. W. Gorriango, the Agricultural Department ’a instructor, should assist in formulating tho scheme. It was decided to write to tho Auckland branch asking them to submit a scheme in accordance with their ideas. Tho financial' position of the branch at present was very satisfactory, stated the secretary. There was over £2O in hand, with a number of subscriptions

still to come in. Several new members were elected. Accounts, totalling £lO/14/0, were passed for payment.
