DRAPERS CLASH IN RUGBY RIVALRY
Nobody knows exactly how it came about, whether the rival staffs had had differences over the All Blacks’ chances in South Africa, or had been arguing ever Manawhenua’s chances.of regaining the Eanfurly Shield, should Wairarapa beat Canterbury At any rate the employees of ColUnson and Cunninghame and C. M. Boss Go. had been reading, talking and thinking football, until at last they could restrain themselves no longer and must play it. Accordingly the elite of both firms attended by a goodly following of barrackers of both sexes met in their first Test on the Showgrounds yesterday afternoon. In the first spell it was apparent that “Eoscos” meant business as from a scramble in front of tho line, . Mayo went over to draw first blood. 3 —o. Shortly afterwards Glendinning capped this by a good try to give “Eosco’’ the lead 6 —o, an advantage they held till half-time. , In tho second, spell it was obvious that C. and C’s had conferred one with another, and were of. opinion that the margin should be reduced. Aided and abetted by his colleagues', Strawbridge secured and dived over to reduce the lead to 6—3. (Nobody had. practised kicking goals apparently). Heartened by this success,.as well as by the shrill soprano of the barrackers, Hollier made fame for himself with a good try in the corner. 6—G. Time was creeping on and excitement was intense ,whcn it was put beyond all shadow of doubt that Claude Dixon had been studying South African methods, as with a magnificent “pot” from over thirty yards out he emulated Bennie Osier to give G. and C’s the victory 10—6. Time Went before “Eosco” recovered from tbeir surprise. - •, * As Mr. Colin McKenzie alone knew which side was which,, in their , varied colours, he was entrusted with the whistle.
