RADIUM IN ASHES
£BO PLAQUE THROWN AWAY. RECOVERED FROM DUSTBIN. Radium which was thrown by mistake into a dustbin and then Into an incinerator has been recovered at St. Thomas’ Hospital, by scientific examination of the cinders taken from the incinerator. The radium, worth about £BO, which had been used for the treatment of a patient in a ward, was wrapped in a mass,of sticking plaster and left by an attendant in a basin. Another attendant threw what he thought was discarded plaster into a dustbin for incineration. When the loss was discovered, after the contents of the dustbin had been burned, the radiologist suggested that the ashes should bo searched, as radium would not burn. The whole of the clinker was accordingly taken to a laboratory, where tests by the staff revealed the presence of radium. The cljnker was carefully broken up, and tho radium plaque was found intact. . ,
