ST. ANDREW’S BEAT ATHLETIC. On Saturday St. Andrew’s met Athletic in the first tic for the Chatham Cup. This was the only senior game played. On form, followers of the code had no hesitation in forecasting Athletic as the victors, but the Saints surprised and the game ended 2—l in their favour. While the Athletic forwards gave their side the territorial advantage for most of the game—the rocklike defence of the Saints held Chilton .in goal for the victors gave a magnificent display of a goalie’s duties well carried out. From their kick' off the Saints took the .leather flown field only to bo tumbled back by a determined black attack. Tho blue defence was tight— Watt essayed a shot which Brown sent behind. The corner kick was cleared and McSheffery put the Saints on an attack which fell when tho leather —-t behind. Midfield was the venue of play for some time, the blacks eventually raiding; a long shot by Watt going over the bar. In clearing a further black attack Brown handed over tho bar. Prom the resulting corner the blacks looked certain to score, but Chilton saved in a brilliant manner as he did again a little later. The blacks were fighting hard and had the opposition well nigh bewildered, but defence was tho Saints’ forte. Suddenly the Saints cleared in an attack which rolled the opposition back. -Corkindalo sent in a shot which Pitzhcrbert just saved. St. Andrew’s persisted and were rewarded when Cortdn dale beat Askam and found tho net with a hard shot. The blacks made frantic efforts to equalise but halftime found no change in the score. On resuming Athletic’s efforts found the blue defence as solid as ever. Up and down play saw- the blacks dangerous until the Saints cleared and their forward line launched an attack. Hart crossed to Corkindale who netted again. The blues sustained,, their efforts and Athletic had to concede a corner to clear. The play see-sawed for a while, handling, by McSheffery gave tho blacks a penalty. Askam made no mistake with the kick. The Saints again mustered their storming party—a long shot by Corkindale narrowly missing. Athletic at this stage lost Travers who had injured his back. The Saints were in a position to increase their lead but McSheffery offside spoilt the 'effort. The blue forwards kept hammering, shots going very near ”t times. Condition now found out both sides—there was a visible let up, tho game slowing down until the final whistle which found the score 2 —l in favour of St Andrew’s. Mr. Forbes was referee.
