FEARED 169 MINERS HAVE PERISHED IN AMERICAN DISASTER

Explosion Occurs as Shifts Changing Over ONLY THIRTEEN RESCUED ALIVE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright. , Eeceived Monday, 5.5 p.m. NEW YORK, May 20. A Coal mine explosion at Mather, jn ' Pennsylvania, entombed 182 men. Thirty-two bodies have been located; nine were rescued alive. The fate of the remainder in the fire-filled mine is uncertain. Five of the nine rescued are in hospital and aro not expected to live. Experts believe that none of those entrapped in the mine will be found alive, but all possible efforts at rescue will be made. Aid has been extended by the Red Cross and other organisations and by miners. The explosion took place as the day and night men were shifting places and caught' part of each group of workers. It is believed that many bodies are now hidden in the debris. Eater messages state that 13 have now been rescued alive. Thirty bodies have been removed and a like number located. Gas.and fire damp hamper the rescue party, who fear that 200 are dead. Later. Thirty-four bodies of miners have been recovered. There is little hope for the balance of over a hundred and twenty.
