VICTORIAN BOWLERS AT SOCIAL EVENING

On Thursday evening a very successful social evening was given to the visiting bowlers in the Empire Hall. Mr. J. A. Nash, president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre/ was in the chair. Proceedings opened with the Royal Toast proposed by the chairman. The Toast “Success to Bowlers” was proposed by Mr. J. H. Stevenson, and responded to by Mr. Pilkington. Mr H. Leggo was then called upon to propose the toast of the “Municipality” coupled with the name of Mr. Graham the Mayor. His worship the Mayor replied to the- toast, and took the opportunity of welcoming the visiting team, which ho was unfortunately prevented from doing in the afternoon. The chairman then . proposed “The Health of the Visitors.” After an item Mr. Newham was received with applause to reply to the toast of the visitors. In his speech ho heartily thanked Mr. Nash, the Mayor, and secretary for the great work they had don'o to extend such a hearty welcome as they lyid had that evening Mr. O’Shay proposed the toast of “The Ladies” and Mr. Davcy replied on their behalf. The evening finished with a toast to the artists proposed by Mr. Nash and replied to by Mr. Ross. This was followed by a hearty vote of thanks to tiio chair with musical honours. Mr. Pilkington of the visiting team of Victorian howlers mentioned the fact that out of a population ’of one and a half million, Now Zealand pos scssed 13,000 howlers. Surely this was evidence of the great popularity of the game. Ho stated that in bowls be had never struck such a friendship as permeated the fellowship in Now Zealand.
