BOROUGH COUNCIL DISCUSSES WATER

Cos! of Cleaning Dam To be Reported on

SUGGESTIONS FROM COUNCILLOR ELIOTT There was a brief discussion at tho Palmerston North Borough Council meeting last evening upon the water, supply of tho town following upon thoj official report of the recent poll. j Tho Mayor deemed it an urgent necessity for the Council to proceed with the cleaning of the dam and he moved that tho engineer be instructed to furnish the Council with an estimate of the cost of that work. | Councillor Eliott: I hope nothing will, be done until the winter time when there will be plenty of water. j The Mayor: It can’t be done until the wet season. | Councillor Eliott considered the Council should proceed to do any urgent work in connection with the reticulation of the town. Last year the Council transferred £2OOO from the water account to the general account and he thought it was manifestly wrong to make that transfer when money was so urgently needed to improve tho reticulation. The Mayor: I think wo should confine ourselves to tho cleaning of the dam at present. Councillor Eliott: That is so I’ll have more to say when the matter comes up again. Artesian Wells. Councillor A. E. Mansford gave notice of motion that ho would move at the next meeting of the Council: “That the services of an engineer in artesian supply be engaged to report on the possibility and cost of utilizing artesian water to augment tho present town supply.” Councillor Milverton Withdraws Accusation. During a discussion upon tho extension of tho mains referred to in tho engineer’s report, Councillor W. Milverton accused the Council of deliberately laying onc-ineh‘ mains in streets instead of four-inch, in order to push tho water loan through. Tho Mayor objected to the accusation, and Councillor Milverton eventually withdrew the statement when it was explained to him that the Council had been forced to use a one-inch service because four-inch mains wore not available.
