PAHIATUA EWE FAIR

EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH PRICES. There was a very big attendance of buyers at the Pahiatna Ewe Fair held in the Farmers’ yards yesterday. Some- , thing like 13,000 breeding ewes of | mixed ages, mostly in fine condition 1 were offered. Bidding was brisk, and exceptionally high prices were realised. From the vendors’ point of view, the sale was entirely satisfactory. The following are the reports of the firms who conducted the sale — The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., says: We offered 4.500 ewes to a splendid attendance of buyers from the Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Manawatu and Master-ton districts. The bulk of the yarding went to the Manawatu. Ewes showing quality were in keen demand, and the fair was considered as one of the most successful held this season. A line of 904 four-year ewes from Akitio on account of Haddyn Smith sold for 24s 4d. Other prices were as follows: 4-year ewes, 20s to 24s 4d; good 5-year ewes to 23s 2d; good 2-ycar owes to 30s Id; others, 225, 24s 6d to 29s 3d; mixed 4 and 5-year ewes 17s to 19s 6d; cull ewes, 10s to 14s 3d. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. report a full attendance of buyers from the West Coast, also Eketahuna and Wairarapa districts. The firm yarded 3,000 ewes which were all sold with the exception of one pen at prices well in advance of those recently ruling. The following is a list of prices: On account of J, Bell'shaw, 626 4 to 5-year ewes, ISs 6d; on account of F, West, .210 5-year ewes (heavy skins), 15s 9d; on account of A. Eutherfurd, 420 5-yoar ewes, 21s 3d to 21s Sd; on account of J. F. Beaumont,, two-tooth 29s 9d, four-tooth 26s 7d; m.a., 17s 8d; on account of other vendors, 4 to 5year ewes, 15s to 21s; 4-ycar ewes. 245; 4 to 6-tooth, 25s 6d. Dalgoty and Co., Lid.,, report that its portion of the yarding comprised 7,400 ewes which wore disposed of with the exception of one pen of 268. Com- , petition was keen and prices wore well ■ above recent sales. A largo portion of the sales was secured by Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki buyers. Heckler, 4-yenr , ewes, 2Gs .od; 4. and 6-th ewes, 27s 3d; on account of Dr. C. P. Knight, 5-year ewes, 21s 6d; on account of H. Wilton 4-yoar ewes, 23s 9d; 2-th ewes, 24s 6d; on account of S'. Humphries, 4-year ewes, 21s 9d; 5-year ewes, 19s. 4d; on account of Thos. Anderson, 4 and 5year ewes, 21s Id; on account of D. Mnrison, 2-th ewes, 275; on account of B. E. Nelson, 5-year ewes, 22s 7d; on account of J. D. Piper. 5-ycar ewes, ISs Sd; on account of J. Piper and. Sons, 4-year ewes, 21s Id. Rougher sorts of full-mouthed ewes made from 16s to ISs.
