AMBULANCE WORK

PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATE;

A pleasant function was held in the Railway Social Hall on Saturday cvcn-| ing when the certificates won by mem- . bers of the Railway Division of St. : John’s Ambulance Brigade, wore presented by Mr. J. A. Nash; M.P. |- Sir. H. Langford, superintendent, presided. The chairman welcomed Mrs. Z. Gill and lady members of the Brigade, and also Mr. J. Stone who was an original J member of the railway division in Pal-j morston North. Ho also read several | apologies for absence, including one [from members of the Railway Board.| I Ho then introduced Mr. J. A. Nash, ! M.P., who had kindly consented to present the certificates. Mr. Nash was received with applause and made complimentary reference to j the nature of the gathering. He ex-’ pressed his pleasure at the presence of | Mrs. Z. Gill, superintendent of the, ladies’ division in Palmerston North,| and recalled the growth of the brigade i and its work over a period of 25 years.' Thanks to the generosity of the Pal-| merston North public, the brigade hadmade rapid strides. The result was that people in indigent circumstances could now bo sure of gratuitous skilled attention from this voluntary effort. The people of Palmerston North did not realize the splendid services the members of the bri-£tdo were rendering. The very nature of a railway-! man’s calling made a knowledge ofi ambulance work an essential part of' his training, and an asset to the Department and public. The speaker congratulated the Palmerston North division in having secured 100 per cent, passes.

Mr. Nash then present, amidst applause 71 certificates to those who had secured them.

Following the presentation of certificates, tlic chairman referred to the excellent services given by Dr. C. W.

Peach (lecturer} anil Messrs. IT. Hepworth and E. H. Andrews (instructors) and ashed Mr. Nash to present to these gentlemen framed photos of the two 1927 classes.

Mr. Nash also referred to the ex cellcnt work performed by those gen tlcmcn.

Messrs. Andrews and Hcpwortli returned thanks. Dr. Peach was unavoidably absent. During the evening a musical programme was contributed to by the following: Instrumental items, Messrs. Muirhead and Howlcy; songs, Mrs. J. W. Fergie, Misses M. O’Grady and M. Bennett, Mr. W| Bryden and Master Pritchard; elocutionary items, Miss Langford. ►Supper was dispensed by the diviaion and the chairman returned thanks to all who had contributed to the enjoyment of the evening. The gathering concluded with a dance and Mr. J. Muirhead (secretary of the division) and members of the

committee arc to congratulated upon tlie success of the function.
