ELECTION IN JAPAN
STIFLING THE OPPOSITION.
ACTON BY THE GOVERNMENT. TOKIO,- February 7. Nine hundred candidates represent* ing six parties, Are entering the last stage of the general .election cam-, paign. The election will take place on February 20. The Government is using the police to stifle the opposition in many amazing ways. Polico regulations prohibiting anything calculated to disturb peace and good order are being used to prevent direct criticism of tho ; Cabinet. The main Opposition headquarters have been raided, and the bulk of the election literature, which indirectly accused the Prime Minister, when Minister of War, of misusing millions of military funds, has been, seized. Candidates representing the Labour parties have been prevented by the police from addressinug the electors. Who attend Labour and Opposition meetings in force. The general impression is that the Government will be returned with a fair majority, carrying the rural districts. Labour’s chances of securing more than ton seats are dim.
