THE MUNICIPAL POLL

'" IT . ” ■’ 1 (To The, Editor. Sir,—l notice JnXa * recent issue of your journal that you drew attention to tho apathetic’ spirit' displayed by a great number of electors, who neglected to enrol. I, as an ex-public man, endorse the whole text of your article* In order to oblige a considerable number, I obtained enrolment forms, and left them at their residences and quite thirty per cent, of them neglected to fill them in until too late. If. they had not got the franchalse, they would have snorted: also many did not take the trouble-to inspect the roll, and are now. surprised to find their names struck off for some reason. In some cases, it is the wife whose name.is missing; in other cases, the husband's. They were well aware that- tho onus rested upon them to inspect the rolls in cases where transfers were made, when they had sold their properties, they did not trouble to place their names on the residential only, so on election day, they will get a shock. To-day I met several who have not got a vote, for that reason. I advised them to put their cases before the Town Clerk, when, perhaps, they could vole, by signing a statutory declaration before an officer. Tn any case the business-men, at whose shops rolls were to bo found, state that there is not nearly the same interest displayed that there was four years ago when the Mayoral contest resulted in the- return of the present Mayor, This is a great pity.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
