FEILDING MAYORALTY

* WIUNUUUI/UK jaiWUHiOT ram ACCEPTS. In response to a deputation of Feilding business men who waited on him yesterday Cr. Ernest Fair has consented to nomination as Feilding’s next Mayor, and as the office is not likely to be contested he will soon be numbered amongst those progressive and public spirited citizens who have filled the high office with credit both to the town and the community at large. The deputation was in charge of Mr C. S. Jeffs of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce) who invited the retiring Mayor (Mr W. E. Carthew) to speak. Mr Carthew said that it was recognised that other merhtaers of the Council, who by their longer service had a prior right to the office, but these gentlemen were not available and citizens had decided to approach Mr Fair. All were satisfied that his service on the Council would fit him for the position and the deputation were present to ask him to accept nomination. Cr. A. H. Sutton supported the Mayor's remarks and expressed the belief that • Cr. Fair would fill the position with credit to himself and to the ratepayers. Mr. Edmund Goodbehcre expressed similar sentiments and claimed that the deputation was expressing the opinion of a large body of ratepoyers (applause).

Other speakers at the gathering were Crs. D. Pryde and H. Stewart and Messrs S. D. Pearce, A. E. Sandford, C Hausmann and C. S. Jeffs. In consenting to accept nomination Cr. Fair stated he had been eight years in Feilding and during his short 4 service on the Council he had been in close touch with the Mayor and knew the work the office involved. Since he had been in Pending he felt that that the Borough had been well managed and that the ratepayers -had received value for their money. The Council had capable officers in Mr. N. C. Harding (town clerk) and Mr T. K. Hay (borough engineer) and their efforts had made the work of the Council comparatively easy. He would ,bo willing to accede to the request of the deputation (applause).
