MEETING UNEMPLOYMENT
COUNCIL’S REPRESENTATIVES TO RECEIVE CONSIDERATION. BAD TIMES AHEAD. The Prime Minister advised the Borough Council last evening that the Council’s representations in regard to the relief of unemployment in the Borough of Palmerston North would receive consideration. The Mayor (Mr. F. J. Nathan)’ stated that within- the' last month six additional married men with families had been placed on the railway tion works, but no more could bo employed there until the arrival of the steam shovels. He had impressed upon the Prime Minister that workers travelling from town to town should not be given preference over Palmerston North residents.
Cr. Edwards : Unemployment is go. ing to be a big matter this winter. It is startling the number of people who have called upon me.
The Mayor c, There is no question about that. Unemployment was bad last winter and it is going to be bad this winter.
