BAND CONTEST AT WELLINGTON

PALMERSTON PLAYER SUCCESSFUL IN SOLO. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Last Night. A beginning was made this morning with the solo competitions, the first on the programme to be “Zanobla” for G trombones. Twentyone entries were received for this event, but only nine actually comr peted. The judge. Captain T. Herd, of Wellington .awarded first place to' L. Willlcombe, of the Dannevlrke Municipal Band (99 points), K. S. M. Croucher (97), of the Hamilton Band being second, and F. Halle (965), Wanganui Garrison, third. Flv e competitors faced the judge, Captain Herd, in the EE Flat Baas solo (“The Hardy Norseman”). J. P. Cowlishaw (Palmerston North) was first with 98 points and P. Tretheway (Wellington Tramways) second, with 96 points. Boys’ Solo, own choice music; L. Moody (Woolston) 80, 1; Dick Wills (Invercargill Civic) . 79, 2. In the hymn contest twenty bands competed. Groymouth Battalion (29 points) were first, St. Kilda and Katkaral (28 points each) were second, and Alexandra’s own (27 points) fourth. The judge spoke of the fine and correct rendering of the hymn from the words’ point of view. The playing of the leading bands exceeded his anticipation. To-morrow’s events, all of which take place in th e Town Hall, are the BB Flat Bass Solo (“The Hardy Norseman”), and the Euphonium Solo (“I Capuletti"), which will be decided in the morning. The Tenor Horn Sola (“Carnival of Venice") and the Tenor Trombone Solo (“Send Forth the Call”) will be judged in the afternoon, the evening session being devoted to the playing by the B Grade bands of the test selection, *TI Flauto Magico,”
