Counsel for Papers Not Asked to Reply

The hearing has been heard in tho High Court of the application by the Sydney newspapers, the “Sun,” “News,” “Herald,” and “Telegraph” to restrain the New South Wales’ Govern, ment from enforcing its half-penny newspaper-tax. Twelve barristers and five King's Counsel were engaged in the case. The Commonwealth Government was given leave to intervene to argue the invalidity of the tax on the ground that It constitutes an intrusion into the Commonwealth’s domain. At the conclusion of Counsel McTiernan’s argument, on behalf of the New South Wales’ Government, the Chief Justice said he would not call on counsel for the newspaper proprietors to reply. After consultation among the judges it was announced that judgment would be reserved.
