Reports from the grain areas indicate a fairly satisfactory position as regards the wheat and oat crops, but rain is badly needed in some districts in order to ensure the fulfilment of expectations. The early sown crops have reached the stage where satisfactory yields can bo reckoned upon, but the later sowings arc loss promising. Hot weather and the shortage of rain together are responsible for (be early harvest. Rca.ping is proceeding In a tow of the drier areas. Plant diseases and insect posts are reported to bo responsible for considerable damage. The outlook in the potato growing districts generally is not so satisfactory'. rain being badly required to carry them over the critical stages. The present prospects for a heavy yield are not bright,-but timely rain would greatly help to improve the position. The insect posts in some districts arc retarding the growth and causing much damage to the potato fields.
