CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At the regular meeting of the Central school committee, held last evening, there were present; Rev. H. 'l'. Peat (in the chair) and Messrs. H. J. Canton, W. R. Mayes, R. C. Reay, A. H. Mills. \V. B. Willoughby, and A. H. Fisher (secretary). Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr. B. F. do Berry) reported that the average attendance during the month was 738.5 and that the roll number now stood at 532. During the month Miss Melius and Messrs. Gabitcs and Bunn had been absent owing to illness, and Miss Haggitt was still away for the same reason. Miss Emmett, substitute probationary teacher, had left on October 29, to take up a position at Oroua Downs, and Mrs, C. B. Wcckes and Miss Warren had declared their intention of retiring from the staff on January 31. 1927. Miss Warren had been on the staff for over six years, and ha,d been earnest in all her work. During the past year she had liiicd the position of sports mistress. In her position as senior lady teacher. Mrs. Wcekes had had ample opportunity of building up the characters of the girls in her charge, and had responded to tho call nobly. Xo school had boon better served by any teacher.

During (he month tho following visitors had visited tho school. Mr. Hodge (architect), Miss Hirst, English exchange teacher, who had conducted a course of eurythmics at the school, and Mr. E. D. Tgylor. supervisor of school music. Tho best thanks of tho school were due to Mr. H. J. Canton for his valuable work on the school grounds. General.

It was resolved to send a loiter to !lie Board intimating that during iho recent gale several tiles had been blown off (lie roof of the Infants’ school, and when an inspection of the roof had been carried out by a local builder it bad proved to be in a shocking state. The Board’s architect was to be asked to inspect the roof himself and to send in his own report, to the Board. An application for (he position of caretaker of the school baths by Mr. A. Wheatley was favourably considered. Accounts totalling £S 11s Gd were passed for payment.
