EARLY POTATOES
LOW YIELD AM) POOR PRICES. PUKEKOHE, Monday. The position of the market is causing growers o£ early potatoes concern. Fears arc entertained of a bad tinie ahead unless an improvement takes place soon. The prices are fully £7 below those ruling at a similar period last year, while the yield is low, due to an abnormally wet season and the absence of sunshine. Appearance leads one to conclude that the yield is heavy, but growth went to the tops and the tubers are small and light. 'The demand yesterday and to-day was greater than the supply, on account of boisterous weather preventing digging operations. The low price is attributed to the fact that consumers prefer good quality Southern at a cheap price to dear new potatoes, also to tho scarcity of money generally. A much larger area is under potatoes than usual. Onions are growing vigorously and look healthy.
