FUTURE OF SYDNEY

GROWTH OF NORTH SHORE SYDNEY, Oct. 21. The fact that practically half the population of Sydney uses the harbour in the course of business, apart from those who take merely their pleasure and recreation on and about its waters, and that the fleets of ferries which radiate from Circular Quay carry about 37,000,000 passengers yearly between the northern and southern shores of the harbour, enables one to understand better the prophecy a day or two ago of Dr. 'Bradfield, the designer of the Sydney Harbour bridge. With four lines of railway crossing the harbour bridge, carrying from 180 to 200 trains an hour. Dr. Bradfield eays that he sees the not distant future when the northern suburbs of Sydney, across the water, will develop into an independent city with a population of a million ana a-quarter people. Sydney folk ought to be well acquainted with both the bridge work and the underground railway, of which he is in charge, for hardly a week passes without an illustrated lecture by him in one or other of the suburbs on these two gigantic projects. A glutton for work, Dr. Bradfielfl seems to welcome rather discourage investigation of the works especially as they effect the future than discourage invitations to give the public an intimate knowledge of these development of metropolis.
