DAIRY CONTROL

REASONS FOR J.OW ADVANCES. RECENT STATEMENT CONTESTED. Replying to the rocont statement made by Mr W. Goodfellow, Mr C. P. Agar, general manager of the Tai Tapu Dairy Company, said:— "Mr Goodfcllow in his statement published through (ho Press Association states that tlie market position for butter is quite sound and that ho expects to sec the price back to 170 s. It would be interesting to the producers to know why it is that- Mr Goodfcllow and his colleagues on the Dairy Control Board arc advancing to factories only ll?.d per lb for first grade New Zealand salted f.0.b.. if in their opinion butter is likely to be worth 170 s when it reaches the Homo market, which is equivalent to almost Is 41cl per lb f.o.b. If London will only finance the Dairy Control Board ' to make advances of 11 id per lb for first grade butter, there must be many others besides myself who have little if any faith In the methods proposed by the oompulsorycontrolitcs. "Mr Goodfellow says that Auckland Province has faith and is’prepared to stand with the hoard, but he questions the backbone of Taranaki and the South Island. It is not a question of faith or backbone, but sheer plain commonscnsc. Drop dairy control and factories can get Is 3d f.o.b. financed and dairy farmers a reasonable advance against their Inittor-fat, instead of the present. position, which is intolerable to the factory and impossible to the dairy farmer.’’

Mr Agar added that the dairy farmers should make representations to the Control Board and to the ;icting-Primo Minister if they wanted to see a rcsonable return for their labour during the corning season. If control were dropped the position would almost immediately re-adjust itself. Under control tho future must remain uncertain.
