After “White Cargo” had been enthusiastically acclaimed -in Auckland and ■Wellington by spell-bound aduiences, Mr. Leon Gordon was very much surprised at the extremely cold reception his play received at the hands of Wanganui audiences saya the "Chronicle” "Right up to my visit to Wanganui. ‘White Cargo’ has scored the success expected after its ■wonderful reception in Australia, and it has proved a losing proposition to come to a town like Wanganui, which is only small as towns go, and receive half-hearted applause. Why, your people did not even applaud the character work which has been praised by critics the world over! “I brought a fully imported company to New Zealand,” said Mr. Gordon, “and I could easily have dropped half of the 22 when doing the “smalls” However, I preferred not to take that action.” Mr. Gordon staled to a reporter that ho intended returning to New Zealand with three plays, but ho did not think ho would visit Wanganui again.
