MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL
COMMITTED M EETING. The monthly mooting of tho commit too of (ho Manchester street school was hold on Monday evening. Mr. H. Mclntyre presiding. There wore also present Messrs. Baker, Shelton, Campbell, and Mesdames Darragh and Miles. Mr. Barltrop's 'name was added (o (he ground committee. The headmaster, Mr. D. P. Thurston, submitted the following report, which was adopted; The average attendance for the quarter ending September 30 was 450.4 out of an average roll number of 526.4. Tho low average was caused by influenza, whooping cough and the. wretched weather prevalent during the period, and will, no doubt, bo the cause of the school being reduced a grade at the end of tho year, as, without taking into consideration tho average for tho quarter just ended, an average of at least 504 will be required for the present quarter to make up for tho first two quarters of the year.
At the end of last mouth, Mr. Still. substitute probationary assistant. loft to take up an appointment elsewhere. The vacancy created has been advertised but a fresh appointment has not yet been made. On S eptemher 20 Miss A. Hunt, an expert in e.urythmics and musical appreciation, visited the school, while on October -1 and 5, Messrs. Crawford and Adams, inspectors, paid their annual visit.
The asphalt area round the school requires attention as many holes have been made in the surface. In connection with the above, if your committee’s funds arc short, a school concert might be presented, after the yearly examinations are over, and the repairs to the asphalt; could then bo completed during tho Christmas holidays. I beg to suggest that the. rustic fence, now old and broken, bo removed. This work could be done by the senior boys.
