FAMOUS PAINTING
PURCHASED FOR AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND. Oct. U. Through tho generosity of Mr. Moss Davis tho citizens of Auckland will shortly be possessors of what is considered by some to bo the best example of the late Lord Lcighton’-s paintings, “Tho Spirit of the Summit.” The picture, 78in by 39iin, was exhibited in tho Royal Academy in 1594. Lord Leighton was then president of tho academy. In tho same year, there were four other pictures from Lord Leighton’s brush, including “Fatidica,” Summer Slumber,” and “At the Window.’ ’ Some of the critics at the time preferred “Fatidica,’ but undoubtedly the artist himself felt he had put his best work into the study that is now to find a permanent home in New Zealand.
