RUSSIAN MONASTERIES
ORDER FOR ABOLITION. SYSTEM HAS OUTLIVED USEFULNESS. * [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, March 28. The Riga correspondent of “The Times” says that the self-styled "Ho!) Synod” of Moscow, representing thi . Red branch of the Russian Orthodox Church, has decided, apparently under the Soviet’s instructions, to abolish monasticism, declaring that this system has outlived its purpose and does not reflect modern ideas. Therefore, the monks must repudiate their vows ar|d adopt a useful livelihood. It is pointed out that since 19 28 many monasteries have continued obscurely keeping within the law by organising as working communities. The Soviet has seized St. Izaac'a Cathedral at Leningrad because, in the night, rowdies stole the external bronze ornamentations. It is believed that the Soviet officials themselves despoiled the exterior aa a pretext for seizure.
