THE PRICE OF LAMB

WORK FOR THE MEAT BOARD

FORECAST THE FUTURE,

"That the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board be to Investigate the prices of lamb and publish an independent report and forecast, and also explain why there should be a great disparity in price between the different grades of lamb.” This resolution was passed at the meeting of the North Canterbury executive of the Farmer’s Union on Wednesday. Mr. W. W. Mulholland introduced the subject by suggesting that th 6 Meat Board might be asked to make a comprehensive report and clear up the position. There was uneasiness about Ithe prices obtained for lamb.

"Many farmers do not see why there should be such a great disparity between Ithe price of heavy-weight and light-weight lambs,” said Mr. R. T. McMillan. Certain firms had their quotations for lamb made public, and farmers were expected to take these prices as a guide as to what lamb was worth. The Meat Board should investigate the position. Mr. Mulholland said that there were two things the farmers wanted to know. They wanted information about the real value of the stuff in the market (presumably the Home market), and, also, a statement setting out, as nearly as possible, the trend of /the market for the next three or four months. This immediate forecast would be of great value to producers. The speaker realised that the Board had done something but he thought it might be able to do more.
