PORIRUA CROSSING SMASH
CORONER’S REMARKS. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 5. “This is not the first accident that has occurred at the Porirua railway crossing, and in that respect it must be considered a dangerous crossing. There have been several tragedies lately in this direction, and the public interest has been aroused with a view to reducing the liability to accidents at railway crossings. Judging from the remarks of correspondents in the papers, there is no doubt that the railway autholrties, highw r ay boards, and local bodies will take some Joint action to reduce to a minimum the danger that exists at level crossings.” These remarks were made by the coroner, Mr. Riddell, at the inquest concerning the death of James Power who was killed at the Porirua level crossing on February 28. Evidence was given that the deceased was warned that a train was approaching. A verdict of accidental dcajth was returned.
