ALONE IN LIGHTHOUSE
KEEPER’S LONG ORDEAL. LONDON, December 28. Owing to his colleague's illness, Mr. Evans, the keeper of the Godrevy lighthouse, was compelled to tend the light, single-handed, for 14 hours nightly. ' The lighthouse is situated on a rock four miles from the mainland on the loneliest part of the Cornish coast, near St. Ives.
Telephonic communication with the land had been interrupted for six weeks, but the coastguards’ attention was attracted on Christmas Evo by means of rockets and other signals. A lifeboat was put off, and, in spite of the darkness and heavy seas, the sick keeper, who was waiting on the rocks wearing a lifejacket and ready to swim to the boat, was rescued. On being taken to hospital he was found to bo suffering from double pneumonia.
Yesterday, a lifeboat unsuccessfully attempted again to reach the lighthouse and land relief. A further attempt to-day relieved the situation.
