BEACH CROWD ENTERTAINED
LIGHTLY CLAD young man goes BERSERK. LEADING TOO STRENUOUS A LIFE. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH Last Night. A sensation was caused at New Brighton srfortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon by the extraordinary behaviour of a young man clad only In a pair of shorts. Ho clambered on to the tiled roof of the pier buildings, ran all over the roof and then sat down and started to throw tiles on to the roadway below. Ho also pulled down the electric wires. A crowd of over one thousand people watched his antics, and a posse of police was hurried to New Brighton in a police van. The young man knew a couple of the policemen and submitted quietly to be escorted back to Christchurch. It is estimated he did £7O or £BO worth of damage at Brighton. He was removed to a mental hospital. The young man is well known in sporting circles In Christchurch. His nervous breakdown is believed to have been caused by too much deep study after working hours, combined with strenuous endeavour on fields of sport over a considerable period.
