[From Our Own Correspondent.] Valedictory. There was a large attendance at, Mangaore on Saturday, when the staff of the Public Works Department and friends in Shannon assembled to bid farewell to Mr. A. J. Ridler (chief clerk) who has been promoted and transferred to Dunedin. During the evening competitions were v hcld and song and dance indulged in til] midnight The competitions took the form of an impromptu speech, each gentleman being handed a strip ,of paper with a subject thereon to which he was expected to speak for two minutes and resulted in Dr. Mackeroth “Ladies" first, Mr. Robinson "Dreams” second. Mr. Jones “Shingled Heads,” third.

During the evening, Mr. Robinson (chief electrical engineer) took the opportunity to present Mr. Ridler a beautiful travelling rug. In doing so, he said they were .going to lose a man whose place would indeed be hard to fill. Mr. Ridler had been a sterling worker and a source of information. He had, to be appealed to on numerous occasions and could always be relied upon to settle all questions tactfully. On behalf of all present he wished him a successful career. Messrs. Johnston (engineer in charge of works). Blackwood (Power House engineer), Moodie and Henry said they also wished to endorse Mr. Robinson’s remarks. Mrs. Ridler was then presented with a solid bronze jar and feelingly replied. Proceedings terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Ryne,” and three cheers for Mr, and Mrs. and Baby Ridler. Bowls. A team from Shannon visited Levin on Saturday and made an effort to bring home the Klnnlburgh feathers, but were unsuccessful, being beaten by one point. The team was Whibly, Blight, Murray, Gagliardi (skip.). Competitions for the pairs championships are now in full swing and an effort will be made to finish them early in the New Tear. Results so far are: Roach and Jones beat Morgan and B. Spencer. Shannon and E. Spencer beat Butt and Knowles; Robertshaw and Bartholomew [beat Cronquest and Aim. Tennis. The courts daily now bear an animated appearance, there being always a large crowd in attendance. Ladder matches are now In full swing and several of the favourites have had to take the count. Christmas Rush. Both the Railway and Post and Teelgraph staffs report big business and the return of traffic should hold Its own with past records.
