FOUND DROWNED
BODY DISCOVERED IN MANAWATU RIVER, When Mr. Charles Newth, of College street, was fishing in th e Manawatu river at Aokautere on Thursday afternoon, his attention was drawn to what looked like the body of a man half submerged in the water and jammed amongst logs aVd driftwood that had collected some distance out in the stream. Ho was unable to make sure of his discovery, but decided to report the matter to the police. Two members of the force proceeded to the locality yesterday and proved Mr. Newth to be right in his surmise. Difficulty was experienced in getting the body ashore, owing to its decomposed state and the depth |of the water. A bag with (wo stones in it was tied round the nock and both legs were lashed together, pointing to a case of suicide. At the morgue the body was identified aa that of a labourer and bottle gatherer named Frank Scambary, a single man and returned soldier, 43 years of age. He had been reported missing since November 16 and prior to his death resided in Main Street, Terrace End.
