POULTRY PICKING
A farm without poultry is a financial mistake. More turkey losses are due to breeding from immature stock than to any other cause, including the blackhead scourge. Ho who relics upon "luck” in the care of hens has missed his calling. Success does not depend upon luck. Turkey breeding stock should be changed about every throe years. Nature protests against inbreeding by
giving warning with club-footed and ill-conditioned offspring.
Probably no species of birds should be more carefully fed and raised for Christmas market than the duck. Only foods that will Impart a good flavour to the moat should be allowed. For a week or so before marketing .those birds intended to be butchered should be confined to separate quarters and given, with a regular ground-grain ration, a good supply of boiled pototoes (usually mashed) and plenty of fresh water.
