FLOWER SHOW AT ASHHURST

IX AH) OF ST. MARY’S CHURCH. The promoters of the annual flower show in aid of St. Mary’s Church fu d held at Ashhurst yesterday, are to be congratulated upon the magnificence of the display and also upon the success which attended their efforts. The weather of the last week or two nas not been altogether in the favou" of the garden, yet horticultural enthusiasts at Ashhurst yesterday were able, as a result of careful attention to their gardens during the unpropitious days, to stage such a show of blooms as is rarely seen in country towns o! even greater size. Roses and sweet, peas predominated, as one would cx_ poet at this time of the year, yet all varieties of spring and summer flowers were represented. The frun and vegetable section was not strong, but the show was held rather early in the year to secure a big entry in. this branch of gardening. The exhibits that were staged, however, y cl. merited the prizes they secured. An exceedingly attractive section was that devoted to cooking and preserves, where delightful dainties vied in keen competition, reflecting great credit, upon the busy housewives ana daughters who competed In the various classes.

The show was formally declared open by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., who was introduced to the crowded hall of spectators by the Rev. F. M. Kempthorne, vicar of St. Mary’s. Having expressed his pleasure at Mr Nash’s presence, the vicar also took occasion to congratulate him upon- his oolitieal victory, which had saved the church from p i:hiring itself. In expiaration, Mr Kempthorne stated that they had taken the liberty of priming on their schedule the letters M.P. after Mr Nash’s name, and that was some time before the election took place.

Mr Nash, in declaring the show open, said the present show was the twelfth that had been held. He only wished the same enthusiasm as was evidenced on each occasion was displayed by the Palmerston North pub. lie when flower shows were hold there. A number of ladies and genmake the Palmerston North shows a make the Palmrston North snows a success, but unfortunately they dia not receive the public support that they should. The speaker also referred to the need for a larger hall for Ashhurst, if St. Mary’s shows were going to keep on growing as they had done. The section stewards were as follows: Children’s classes, Mrs Hutton and Miss A. E. Trass; cut flowers, Mrs and Miss Vincent; needlework, Mrs and Miss Houghton; home products, Mesdames Hickey and Maunder; fruit and vegetables, Mrs Hyndman and Mr R. Romley; assistant secretary, Mr A.
