Sir. —Ninety-nine per cent, of the people are appreciative readers of the daily pp-per, but at a rough guess, seventy-five per cent, of these quickly deplore the tendency of even the most “respectable” papers to detail and dwell upon the horrors and sordid intimacies of life’s tragedies. A recent addition to this demoralising influence is that indicated by last week’s gratuitous broadcast information that a certain deadly narcotic drug, hitherto little known to be masses, is as easily procurable at any chemists as an ordinary pill or potion. Upon mentioning this to a member of the pharmacy board he said tnat his board had made the strongest representations to the Government a year ago on the question of publishing such details which did much harm to weak people and no good to strong: but nothing was done;—l am, etc.,
