SEDDON STREET AGAIN

COUNCIL REPLIES TO PROTESTS. The Town Clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie) read to the Borough Council last evening a copy of the resolution passed at a recent, meeting of ratepayers called In protest against the Council’s action regarding the formation of Scddon street The Mayor: Cr. Graham, wall you take the chair in the meantime? Crs. Eliott and Oram rose hurriedly and simultaneously. Cr. I don’t think there ia any need, sir. Cr. Oram: I move that the letter be simply received. Cr. Elliott: I second that.

The motion was put by Cr. Graham but before the “ayes” could reply, Cr. Edwards interrupted, complaining that it was hardly proper treatment to mete out to a resolution passed at a public meeting. It did not fit in with his ideas and was not courteous. The matter was an important one and should not be treated in such a manner. The meeting was one of the most successful ever held in Palmerston North. Cr. Oram: What does Cr. Edwarde suggest should be done? Cr. Hodgons moved as an amendment that the Ratepayers’ Association be supplied with a copy of the Council’s resolution in regard to Seddon street. It was due to the Association as an act of courtesy. Cr. Oram objected, pointing out that the letter received by the Council and which contained the resolution passed at the meeting, was not from the Hokowhitu Association but from an individual. Cr. Canton: I take it the ratepayers are aware of the finding of the Council. Cr. Graham; And as a result hold their meeting . Cr. Fitzherbert seconded the amendment on the plea of courtesy. He said he understood there were between 50 and 60 persons present at the meeting. Ho asked if the Council was to be controlled by a handful iof people in opposition to the majority of the ratepayers who had voted the Council to office. The Seddon street matter had been laboured too much and without necessity. That so few people attended the meeting showed that the majority of ratepayers Were satisfied with what, the Council had done. He only supported the amendment as a matter of courtesy. Cr Edwards: I think there were over 100 people present and it was a fair and square representative meeting. The amendment was carried.
