CANTERBURY MARKETS

FAIR AMOUNT OF FORWARD BUSINESS. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Business is very slow in the grain and produce line, though generally all classes of seeds are firm. There has been a fair amount of forward business in next season’s oats, ■ the figure for spread April-September delivery has been 4/6 for A’s f.0.b., 5.1., and 4/3 for B’s. This is representing an advance of 3d a bushel on the figures of a week or two ago. Sellers are not very keen, the way crops are shaping.

Cowgrass is meeting with an inquiry from the North Island at 127/6 per cwt, f.0.b., 5.1., for machine dressed. Ryegrass is meeting with a firmer inquiry. For 22-2Slb. perennial up tc 6/-, Lyttelton has been paid by the North Island, the equivalent to farmers on truck being 4/6. Italian and ryegrass ,a.nd Western Wolths, are also attracting attention, and there has been a fair amount of business at 4/8 to 4/9 f.0.b., S.I. There has been no consumption -demand to cause the movement, but there is a very general belief that the crop this year will be small )as the backward season has very markedly reduced the area closed up. From 3/3 to 3/6 is being quoted to farmers. Cocksfoot has quietened again. Fowl feed has advanced, due nc doubt to the bad outlook for Australian harvest. Up to 7/4 a bushel f.0.b., Lyttelton has been paid during the week an advance of 4d on three .weeks ago.
