CHESS NOTES

PATjMEKSTON T. WANGANUI. Tho return match between the nbovo clubs was played in the Soldiers' Club, Wanganui, on Saturday evening, and ended In a tie. This result was all tho more gratifying to the visiting team, as four of its members, Including tho champion, K. Thorburn, were unable to attend. Very complete arrangements had been made by tho secretary, Mr. Battle, and, after a short speech of welcome by Mr. L. Pleasants (president), who had risen from a sick bed to bo prosent, very little time was lost in preliminaries. Palmerston won the toss, and had the move at tho odd-number-ed boards. Play commenced at S o’clock, and was very rapid, all games being accounted for by 10. Supper was then dispensed by tho ladles, to whom and to the Wanganui Chess Club tho visiting president, Mr. T. A. Morino, expressed thanks for a very enjoyable evening. The full score:Palmerston. Wanganui. lTu\ A. Marine IL. Pleasants . 0 2. H. R. Thorburn .. IT. H. Battle 0 3. A. G. Richards i.. ~ oj.
