RIFLEMEN FOREGATHER

SEASON CONCLUDED WITH SOCIAL GATHERING. The Manawatu Miniature Rlfls Association brought its season to a close last evening with a social gathering, over which Mr. C. Page (President) presided. There was a large attendance of members of the affiliated clubs, including visitors from Bulls and Bunnythorpe. The evening was devoted to songs, recitations and toasts, and altogether a very pleasant time was spent.. The health of the donor of the J. P. McKelvie cup was proposed by Mr. C. Broughton, who referred to the keen interest Mr. McKelvie toox in sport of any kind. He had been a good friend to the Association and the backbone of rifle shooting in the district.

Mr. R. A. Jones responded on behalf of Mr. McKelvie, who was absent, and also referred in eulogistic terms to what he had accomplished for the ‘Association. There was no doubt that the McKelvie cup had kept shooting going at a time when it had nil but petered out. Mr. A. Gilmore paid a similar compliment to Mr. H. Akers when proposing that gentleman’s health. He described Mr. Aker s as the father of ‘hooting In Palmerston North and mentioned that but for his many generosities, some of the clubs could not have kept going.

■ Mr. Page responded on behalf of Akers, who was unavoidably ah' ~en\ and endorsed the remarks of the proposer of the toast concerning hta open-handedness in all matters relating to shooting. In proposing a health to “Kindred Clubs.” Mr. W. Randell referred to the sportsmanship that existed amongst members and the quality of the shooting. He felt sure the clubs that comprised the Association could hold their own against many of the clack clubs in other towns. Mr. C. Young (Bunnythorpe) responded. Other toasts honoured were: "The Donors of Trophies," and “The Ladles” Occasion was taken by the chairman at a suitable juncture to present the various trophies won during the season as follows: —McKelvle cup, Bulls’ Club; M.M.R.A. cup,. Linton Club; Cliffe and Remington cup (postal) R.S.A. Club; Tisdall cup, R.S.A. Club; Miniature championship cup, H. Barlow (Linton); runners-up medal, C. Broughton (Bulls); B grade championship medal, A. Montgomerie (Awahuri); runner-up medal, A. Gilmore. Match winners at championship meeting; Keeling and Mundy’s trophy, G. Newth (Linton); Colllnson and Son’s trophy, F. Lumsden (Ohakea); B. J. Jacobs’ trophy, J. Milligan (Awahuri); J. A. Nash’s -trophy, A. R. Bayley (Oroua Downs), Manson and Barr’s trophy, A. R. Bayley.
