Advices from Beirut state that martial law has been proclaimed in the towns of Damascus, Sandjaks and Hauran, owing to continued brigandage. \ It is officially explained that the proclamation of martial law does not in any way denote an aggravation of the situation. It has been proclaimed with a view to a rapid restoration of order.
