THE GLOOMY DEAN.

A good deal of interest was recently taken in the visit of Dean Inge, of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, to America. Some American exchanges have been finding amusement in the question as to how the name of “the gloomy Dean” should be pronounced. The Congregationalist quotes the following lines which are attributed to George Bernard Shaw; — If you his temper would unhinge And his most sacred rights infringe Or, excommunicated singe Where fiends forever writhes and cringe/ Imploring that a drop of ginge— A ale may on their tongues impinge, Address him then as Doctor Inje-’ But if you prize the proper thing Be sure you call- him Doctor Ing. (Unless, your ignorance to screen, You temporise with Mister Dean)* But be advised by me and cling To the example of tne king And fearlessly pronounce him Ing. Then rush to hear him have his fling In Paul’s and places where they sing.
