COLOUR BAR

Not Yet Absolute In South Africa SENATE REJECTS GOVERNMENT MEASURE [By Electric Cable—Copyright] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Thursday, 7 p.m.) CAPETOWN, July 8. The Senate, irt which the South African Party holds a majority, rejected by 17 votes to 13 a Government Bill popularly known as the “Colour Bar Bill,” which debars natives from skilled occupations. Senator De Wet, Leader of the Opposition, declared that the real motive behind the Bill was once for all to establish white supremacy in the industrial world. The Minister of Mines maintained that the abandonment of the colour bar would mean the wiping out of white civilisation.

The rejection of the Bill, which was forced through the House of Assembly, in spite of strenuous opposition, will be greatly resented by the Government.
