MARGARINE FOR NEW ZEALAND

(To The Editor.) Sir, —Your paper credits Mr J. IV. Topliss with stating at the Rotary Club that “he deprecated the importation into New Zealand of hundreds of tons of margarine from Groat Britain, etc. It is a pity Mr Topliss should make such wild statements at a place like the Rotary Club, as this will probably be copied all over the Dominion. 1 have searched the Customs records and find that no margarine or other butter substitutes were imported from the beginning ol 1921) up to the end of last, month. 1, therefore, suggest that you give this fact the publicity of your columns in rebuttal of Mr Topliss’s absurd statement. X know margarine is made in New Zealand, and is used to a fair extent by bakers for cakes and pastry, but this can hardly have much effect on the health of the children as mentioned by Mr Topliss.—Yours faithfully, C. Dear Sir, —With reference to a paragraph in the "Dominion” this morning purporting to be an abstract of an address by J. W. Topliss at Hie Rotary Club, Palmerston North and published in your paper, in which Mr Topliss is said to have made a statement to the effect that hundreds of ■tons of margarine are imported from Great Britain ana sold here at fourpence loss than butter. This is pure imagination. There is no margarine being imported from Britain which Mr Topliss could easily have'discovered if he had applied to the Customs Office,- Wellington. And with reference to Vitamines, there is abundant medical testimony to the effect that pure margarine is equally as wholesome ias butter. 1 think that persons making statements in public should be sure of their facts—don't you?—Yours faithfully, ROBERT HALL, Wellington, Dec. 19. 1924.
