BIGGEST POWER STATION IN EUROPE

Walchensee Works, in Bavaria

WILL MAKE COUNTRY INDEPENDENT OF COAL. AND OP POMTIOAL DISCIPLINE, TOO. [By Electric Cable-—Copyright,] JAuat. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Monday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 22. The “Daily Telegraph's” Berlin correspondent states that the Walchensee works, described as the biggest power station in Europe, have been completed. They derive their energy by tapping Walchenfjae Lake, through a tunnel into the Kochellsee, which thus yields 170,000 horse-power. Part of the scheme is for supplying Bavaria with the so-called white coal, totalling a million horse-power. The yield may eventually render Bavaria independent of coal, which she does not possess In its own territory. The distribution scheme carries energy to Nuremburg and industrial towns in Central and Northern Bavaria. A considerable portion of the railways in 1925, will be worked by current from the Bavarian Alps, the power costing one-third of an equal amount of power from coal. This is likely to give Bavaria an advantage over her commercial competitors in Northern and Western Germany, and may draw population to Bavaria. There is also the political aspect of the scheme, as Socialist trade unions in Prussia have .always counted upon establishing a coal blockade if a Ludendorff dictatorship is established in Bavaria, which is likely to be still less amenable to political discipline in this respect. The competition of the Walchensee works does not augur well Cor the tranquility of Germany.
