PIGEON WORLD

(By ’RED CHEQUER.”)

I noticed that the Onehunga Pigeon Club sent homing pigeons to this town for liberation, but on their arrival home, a large number wore found suffering from gunshot wounds. Some so-called sports or gunmen (a sports, man is a gentleman) take a delight of shooting down homing pigeons during the racing season. It is a pity that these gunmen have nothing bettor to da than fire on a harmless flock of homing pigeons. Clubs should make it more widely known that pigeons (homing) are protected by an Act of Parliament, which states that any person who shall intentionally or negligently shoot, kai, disable, ensnare, or otherwise injure any homing-pigeon shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable on conviction to a penalty not exceeding ten pounds. Any person who shall intentionally or negligently kill, maim, or in any way injure a homlng.plgeon whilst in course of transit by railway, coach, or otherwise from its home to the point from which it is intended to be despatched as a bearer of a message, or whilst being trained, shall bo guilty of an offence, and shall be liable on conviction to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. Any person who shall do any of tho acts or things mentioned in sections 2 and 3 of this Act shall be liable to pay to the owner of the pigeon or pigeons shot, killed, disabled, or injured, the value of such pigeon or pigeons or the amount of such injury. The Magistrate before whom any prosecution shall take place under this Act may, in addition to the penalty Imposed, direct payment by tho defendant to such owner of such damage or the amount of such injury.

Mr B. Hickey won the Produce Stakes. Basil always hops out unexpectedly, and does something startling. Mr W E. Griffiths hasn’t been out of a place this season. It’s just a habit with “ Griff,”; just natural. Mr T. Inkpon is doing splendidly. I was pleased to sec Tom hop out and win the Wellington race. Mr T. Tozer got third in the Produce Stakes. He should do better in the old bird races. Rico Bros are not doing much this season, but they hope for better luck in the old bird llutler. Mr Abraham only started active flying last year and he is already well on the way to be a first-class fancier. Mr Dorm has some nice pigeons some of them will be knocking at the door during the old bird races.
