HEAVY SENTENCE FOR BLACKMAIL

A batch of six blackmailers were sentenced at Old Bailey to terms ranging from four to seven years, One accused represented that he knew about income tax frauds and demanded £3OO from a Bradford merchant. Two others victimised Army officers. Mr Justice McCardie said blackmail meant slow death to the victim. It was an offence which was gravely increasing and was on e of the worst cancers of civilisation that must be stamped out.
