While running at Randwick, the English. horse Claro, on the course proper,with hurdles eighteen feet out, ■smashed all records for the track, covering seven fiirlongs in I.2Ci. (The previous best was Collaroi’s 1.29i,' with hm-dles thirty-five feet out). Gloaming once did seven furlongs in 1.252 on the middle grass track without hurdles. DEATH OP AN ENGLISH THOROUGHBRED. [By Electric Cable —Copyright] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, March 31. Mr Solly Joel’s racehorse Polymelus has been destroyed, owing to rheumatic trouble. Polymclus was purchased in 1906 for £4410, and won £16,804 in prize money. Polymelus, foaled in 1902 by Cyliene—Maid Marion, won many notable races on the English Turf before being put to the stud in 1908. As a two-year-old Polymelus won the Criterion Stakes, and Richmond Stakes, both of six furlongs, and the Rous Memorial of five furlongs. In 1905, as a three-year-old, he secured the Gatwick Stakes and Duke of York Stakes, both one mile and a half, and the Durham Produce Stakes of one mile and a quarter. The following year he again won the Duke of York Stakes, annexing also the Champion Stakes, one mile and a quarter, and the Cambridgeshire Stakes, one mile and a furlong. As a five-year-oid Polymelus started only twice, winning the Princess of Wales Stakes, one mile and a half, with the famous jockey D. Maher up. Bred at Newmarket, Polymelus was one of the best-known of English thoroughbreds, tracing his descent through Bend Or to other equally famous strains. He was bred by Lord Crewe. Last year Polymelus was represented by 16 horses who won 24 i races, the amount won totalling £11,280.
